• Meticulous Hygiene: During the first week, gently cleanse your tattoo twice daily with lukewarm water and unscented antibacterial soap provided by your artist. Pat it dry thoroughly with a clean, lint-free paper towel. Avoid harsh chemicals, rubbing, or scratching, as this can disrupt the healing process.
• Targeted Moisturisation: Promote healthy healing by applying a thin layer of fragrance-free, petroleum-free moisturiser 2-3 times a day, following your artist's specific instructions. Over-moisturising can trap sweat and irritate the skin.
• Respect Your Body's Signals: Itching is a common side effect, but resist the urge to scratch! A cool compress can provide temporary relief. If itching persists or becomes excessive, consult your artist or a healthcare professional.
• Breathable Clothing: Tight-fitting garments can irritate your healing tattoo. Opt for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics like cotton to allow for airflow and optimal healing.
• Sun Protection is Paramount: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage your healing tattoo, leading to fading and discolouration. Wear loose-fitting, protective clothing when outdoors and apply sunscreen (SPF 50+) to any exposed tattooed areas, even after it's fully healed.
•
Hydration is Key: Drinking plenty of water helps your body heal from the inside out. Proper hydration promotes healthy skin regeneration and supports a smooth healing experience.
• Scratching or Picking: This is a significant risk factor for infection and scarring. The healing skin is delicate, and scratching can disrupt the ink placement and introduce bacteria.
• Submersion in Water: Avoid submerging your tattoo in pools, hot tubs, lakes, or the ocean for at least 2-4 weeks, or as instructed by your artist. These environments harbour bacteria that can impede healing and increase the risk of infection.
• Strenuous Exercise: Give your body time to heal before resuming strenuous activities like weightlifting or intense cardio. Excessive sweating can irritate your tattoo and prolong the healing process. Consult your artist for specific guidance based on your tattoo size and location.
• Alcohol and Smoking: These substances can hinder healing and increase the risk of infection. It's best to limit them during the aftercare process to optimise healing outcomes.
• Tight-Fitting Clothing: Friction from tight clothing can irritate your new tattoo and disrupt healing. Opt for loose-fitting garments made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
• Ignoring Warning Signs: If you experience excessive redness, swelling, pus formation, or a fever, consult a healthcare professional immediately. These could be signs of infection, which requires prompt medical attention.
